Magnetic Brooch Converters vs Magnetic Brooches: Which One You Actually Need
Most people arrive at this question the same way: they own a brooch they love, they hold it up to a cashmere sweater, and they put it back down. A pin makes a hole. In a wool coat the hole closes; in fine-gauge knit or silk it doesn't, and once you've noticed that, the brooch tends to stay in the drawer.
There are two ways out, and they get confused constantly because they're sold under overlapping names. One is a magnetic converter — a separate accessory you attach to a brooch you already own. The other is a magnetic brooch, where the magnet is part of how the piece was built. They solve the same problem with quite different trade-offs, and which one is right depends almost entirely on whether the brooch in question already exists.
What a magnetic converter actually is
A converter is a small two-part accessory, usually sold in packs. The visible part is a plate or sleeve that grips the existing pin stem of your brooch; the second part is a magnetic backing plate that sits inside the garment. The fabric is sandwiched between them and never pierced.
You'll see them sold as converters, magnetic pin backs, brooch clasps, or pin-to-magnet adapters, and there are two mechanical designs worth telling apart:

Both work. Neither is invisible from the side, and both add roughly the thickness of the pin plus the plate behind the piece.
Converters come in sizes, and the size is a decision you have to get right
This is the part that catches people out. A converter isn't one object — it's a range, and the discs are typically sold in three diameters. The differences look small on a listing page and are not small in practice.

Three things are moving at once when you pick a size, and they pull against each other:
- Holding force scales with the disc. A bigger magnet grips harder. If your brooch is heavy, you need to go up.
- Visibility scales with it too. The disc has to be smaller than the brooch it hides behind, or it shows at the edges. On a delicate piece that rules out the largest size regardless of how well it would hold.
- Fabric thickness pushes you up a size. Through a chunky knit, a 1.0 cm disc behaves like a much weaker fastening. But going up means more bulk, and on a heavy coat that's fine — on a fine blouse it isn't.
And there's a smaller point that adds up: the discs themselves weigh something. A 5.4 g pair added to a brooch is 5.4 g more hanging on the fabric, which is real on silk.
None of this is difficult, but it is a fitting problem you're solving yourself, with a generic part, for each brooch and each garment. It's worth knowing before you order, because a converter that's one size off is a converter that stays in the box.
What a magnetic brooch is
In a purpose-built magnetic brooch, there is no pin. The magnet is set into the body of the piece during manufacture, and the counterpart plate is made to match it. Because the designer knows from the start that the piece will be held magnetically, three things change: the back can be flat instead of accommodating a pin and catch, the weight can be distributed so the piece sits flush rather than tipping forward, and the magnet can be sized to the actual weight of that specific brooch rather than to an average.
That last point is the quiet difference. The sizing problem in the previous section still exists — it's physics, and physics doesn't go away — but it's been solved once, at the design stage, by whoever knew exactly how much the piece weighed. There is no disc to choose, nothing to measure, and no version of the brooch that arrives with the wrong fastening.

The part nobody explains: how strong does it need to be?
Whether a magnetic fastening holds comes down to three variables, and understanding them is more useful than any product claim.
Weight of the brooch
This is the big one, and it's the reason converters fail most often. A light enamel piece will sit happily on almost anything. A large crystal-set statement brooch is several times heavier, and a generic converter has no idea which one you've attached it to. If a converter feels marginal — if the brooch shifts when you move — it is marginal, and it will come off in a coat sleeve at some point.
Thickness of the fabric
Magnetic force falls off sharply with distance, faster than most people expect. A fastening that grips confidently through a single layer of silk can be noticeably weaker through a chunky knit, and weaker again through a knit plus a lining. As a working rule, magnetic fastenings are reliable through one to two layers of normal-weight fabric and become unpredictable beyond that.
Texture of the fabric
A smooth surface lets the two plates settle flush against each other. A heavily textured or bouclé knit holds them apart at the high points of the weave, which costs grip. Same fabric weight, different result.
With a converter, all three variables land on you at the moment you choose a disc size — and you're choosing before you can test any of them. With a purpose-built magnetic brooch, two of the three were settled by whoever specified the magnet, and only fabric is left to think about.
So which one should you choose?
The honest answer is that it depends on one thing.
Choose a converter if the brooch already exists
If you inherited your grandmother's tree pin, or you've been collecting vintage for years, a converter is the right tool. Those pieces can't be rebought as magnetic, and getting them out of the drawer and onto your clothes is worth a bit of extra thickness behind the lapel. Fit it to the lighter pieces first — that's where converters perform best.
Choose a magnetic brooch if you're buying anyway
If you're shopping for a new piece, there's no reason to buy a pin and then buy a workaround for the pin. A brooch designed around its magnet sits flatter, hangs straighter, and has the fastening matched to its own weight. You're not adding a solution; the problem was never introduced.
Most people end up with both
A converter for the inherited pieces, magnetic brooches for everything bought since. That's a perfectly sensible drawer.
Where each one is worn
Neither option changes the traditional placement — left side, high on the lapel or shoulder — but the fabric rules shift once nothing is being pierced. Fine knits, silk blouses, cashmere, and jersey all become available, and so do the awkward spots: a scarf held at the crossing point, a coat collar, the front of a hat. One thing that doesn't change: very heavy pieces on very fine fabric are a bad idea either way. Magnetic fastenings don't pierce the cloth, but a heavy brooch on gossamer silk will still drag and distort it.
Safety, briefly
The magnets used in both converters and magnetic brooches are neodymium, and they're genuinely strong for their size. Two cautions apply to both:
- Pacemakers and implanted medical devices. Anyone with one should avoid strong magnets near the chest, which rules out a brooch worn at the lapel. This is worth remembering when buying for older relatives.
- Small children. The backing plate is small and swallowable, and ingested magnets are a serious medical emergency. Store them out of reach.
Beyond that, keep either type away from credit cards, hotel key cards, and mechanical watches, and don't leave the backing plate loose in a bag with them.
Common questions
Can any brooch be converted to magnetic?
Most brooches with a standard straight pin can. The exceptions are pieces with unusual clasps, very short pin stems, or enough weight that a generic converter can't hold them reliably.
What size magnetic converter do I need?
Match it to the brooch, not to the fabric. Choose a disc a few millimetres smaller in diameter than the narrowest part of the brooch back so it stays hidden, then check it holds through the thickest garment you'd wear it on. Heavier brooches and thicker knits both push you toward 1.4 cm; small pieces on silk are better served by 1.0 cm.
Will a converter damage a vintage brooch?
A well-fitted one shouldn't — it grips the pin stem rather than the piece itself. Avoid anything that requires bending or forcing the pin, and never use adhesive on a vintage piece.
Are magnetic brooches strong enough to stay on a coat?
Yes, when the magnet is matched to the weight of the piece, which is exactly what a purpose-built magnetic brooch does and a generic converter can't. The variable to watch is fabric thickness, not the coat itself.
Do magnetic brooches leave marks on fabric?
No holes, since nothing is pierced. On very delicate fabrics you may see a temporary impression where the plates pressed, which hangs out the same way a fold does.
Can you wear a magnetic brooch on a silk blouse?
This is what they're best at. Silk is thin and smooth, which is the ideal case for magnetic grip, and it's the fabric a pin damages most visibly.
Which is better value?
If you own brooches worth converting, a converter earns its keep. If you're buying a new piece, paying for a pin and then paying again to work around it is the more expensive path.
